Katja Dörig from Hiking Inspirations organized eye camps in Nepal for the second time in spring 2020 together with Birgit Bauer with project management via Freunde Nepals e.V..
Our aim is to provide poor, visually impaired people in the Terai/Chitwan with free glasses, medication and the necessary eye operations over the long term.
The first 9 eye camps took place in fall 2017. Almost 3,000 people were screened, 1,000 pairs of glasses were issued and 70 cataract operations were performed. The team consisted of German/Nepalese helpers and opticians as well as a Nepalese ophthalmologist. The response was overwhelming and so the eye camps were continued. In February/March 2020, we were able to help a second time in very disadvantaged regions in the Terai just before the coronavirus pandemic. Over 2100 people were treated, 100 pairs of glasses were distributed and 50 eye operations were performed.
Dates for the next eye camp in Nepal: March 2022 in Terai/Chitwan and October 2022 for the first time in a Himalayan region in western Nepal.
Katja spends the entire week helping out on site on a voluntary basis and Hiking Inspirations supports the project with funds from the trekking tours.
