After landing at Kilimanjaro Airport, we take the hotel shuttle to our long-established hotel in Moshi in about 1.5 hours. Depending on the time of arrival and how we feel, we can decide whether we want to set off for Mount Meru the next day or take it slowly and use the planned reserve day for a “personal arrival” and a stroll through the town. Packing up the equipment for the ascent of Mount Meru is the order of the day.
The following day or the day after we drive to the Arush National Park, meet our accompanying team there and start our tour to Mount Meru (4562m). During the ascent we spend the night in the Mirakamba Hut (2500m) and in the Saddle Hut (3500m). The route to the huts and up to the summit takes us through savannah, rainforest and moorland before we advance along the crater rim over lava ash and lava rocks to the rocky summit regions. The tour impresses with its incredibly varied landscape and wildlife.
Back at the hotel, we enjoy a rest day, which is also used to sort out the equipment for the ascent of Kilimanjaro.
The next morning we load our equipment and drive to the starting point of our Kilimanjaro ascent completely relaxed. On the way there is still the opportunity to buy a few little things. The drive takes us in a north-easterly direction from Moshi to Machame and the gate of Kilimanjaro National Park.
Here we meet up with our team again, which has now grown a little larger for the 7 days ahead of us. Under the supervision of the park authorities, the loads are distributed evenly and within the weight limits to the carriers, a procedure that takes some time. Then our hut trekking tour to the roof of Africa – one of the Seven Summits – begins.
The walking times on the daily stages are between 5 – 8 hours. Only the summit day is a little longer. We take plenty of breaks and take the slow-slow (pole-pole) with great composure. When we arrive at the camps, our team provides us with hot drinks, tea, coffee, soup and a small snack. We cook in the mornings and evenings and provide a hearty packed lunch during the day.
The Machame route joins the Umbwe and Lemosho routes at the Lava Tower. Due to multiple ascents and descents, the route is somewhat more demanding in terms of fitness – it is also known as the Whisky Route – than Lemosho or Marangu (Coca Cola Route), for example.
On this ascent of Kilimanjaro, we have also set aside an extra day for altitude acclimatization at Karanga Camp.
We will be happy to provide you with details of the tour on request.
